Extant Jobs - The Thursday Dispatch
Want a six figure job in business or tech? You've come to the right place.
🚨 Sneak Peek 🤫- stay tuned for a specialized Extant Jobs Board coming soon 🚨
Continuing with our resume writing deep dive, this edition focuses on the biggest and most important piece of your resume: your experience!
To get started gather these resources to help guide your key accomplishments in your resume experience section:
1. Any quarterly or annual reviews (both self reviews and those from a manager)
Why? These can be the best place to find the highest impact things you worked on
2. The job posting from your current role or previous roles you’ve had
Why? Chances are many of your key responsibilities and accomplishments still align to that old job posting
3. A job posting for a role similar to yours at a competitor
Why? Get a different perspective on the wording and scope of your role
Prompts to get you started:
How have I gone above and beyond?
What impact did my team members or managers note on my performance review? What goals did I meet or exceed?
How did I stand out amongst my colleagues?
Did I get promoted? Win awards?
Was I selected for a special project?
Did I save my company money? Did I increase revenue?
Did I implement anything new?
Did I uncover a key business opportunity?
Creating Bullet Points
Begin every bullet with a strong action verb and avoid saying "responsible for"
Instead, be specific about what you did and articulate the impact of your actions
Use numbers! They’re easy to pick up on and quickly show your impact
Strong Bullet Point Formula:
What You Did: briefly outline the task or responsibility
How You Did It: get more specific and outline how you did the task. This is a good place to highlight tools like SQL
Impact: what was the result or outcome of your action? How did it benefit the organization? Can it be quantified?
Compare:
Responsible for inventory management, manufacturing process flows and fill rates
Introduced inventory flow dashboards enabling for the quick identification and resolution of schedule variances, resulting in an average fill rate increase from 87 to 96%
Tailor Your Experience
Tailor your resume for the specific role and make sure you include keywords that are listed in the description
This will not only help a recruiter quickly scan your resume and see that you're a fit, but it will also help you get past filtering bots.
Don’t be afraid to create resumes focused on different roles, like Strategic Finance or BizOps that reference more buzzwords tailored to that job type
Highlight Impact
Hiring managers want to understand what you did, but also the outcomes
Including specific metrics and results indicates that you are used to working with numbers and creating a measurable outcome – a crucial skill for strategic business roles in tech
Use numbers and signs instead of words (e.g. 3 instead of three and % instead of a percent).
If you're unable to come up with numbers to add to a bullet, you should still add the impact of what you accomplished (in words, instead of numbers)
Other Tips
If you don't have directly applicable experience, focus on transferrable skills that show relevance to the posting
A hiring manager will typically know what a consultant, banker or accountant does. Rather than taking up space on your resume to highlight your job function, focus on what you accomplished
Be careful to not share any confidential information
Be sure to show internal promotions
You can reflect this as a job title under the current one - eg. Previously Analyst and use the same month and year date convention
